Unity Action Week added to lineup as event continues to grow

Spokane, Wash. – Join the more than 10,000 people expected to attend The 17th annual Unity In the Community (UIC), the Inland Northwest’s largest multicultural celebration.  With giveaways of K-8 school supplies, a career and education fair, the Comcast Youth Fair and the Community Health Association of Spokane (CHAS) Health Fair, there’s something for everyone at the free, family-friendly event. Unity In the Community takes place 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 20 in Riverfront Park downtown Spokane, Wash.

New this year is Unity Action Week featuring a Spokane Symphony concert, a free belly dance class taught by local expert, Arika Whiteaker, and the Human Rights Commission sponsoring a Human Rights Day workshop. All this and more takes place the week before Unity In the Community in an effort to extend Unity In the Community's mission:

1.         Promote Unity through showcasing diversity.

2.        Build and grow UIC through community education and awareness inclusive to all communities throughout the region to include the business community.

3.        Exist and sustain as a vital, viable community resource for youth, adults and families for the betterment of Northwest diverse communities.

Besides perennial favorite, Cultural Villages, there will be a large variety of local vendors and entertainers. Entertainers include dancers, singers, bands, martial arts demonstrations and more, representing a diverse array of cultures. The Comcast Youth fair will feature activities for kids of all ages and the CHAS Health Fair will feature information, demonstrations and samples representing traditional, holistic and alternative health.

The event began in 1995 as a networking and neighborhood celebration first held in Liberty Park. It has since grown to become a region-wide signature event held annually in Riverfront Park near the Clock Tower.
